TerraNova scores for DoDDS-Europe remain higher than national average

DoDDS-E Press Release: July 29, 2008

For the third straight year, TerraNova test scores for 2008 show that DoDDS-Europe students in grades 3-11 continue to score substantially higher in all subject areas than their stateside peers.

The TerraNova is a standardized, norm-referenced achievement test developed by CTB/McGraw Hill that compares students' scores to scores from a "norm group." The norm group for TerraNova is a national sample of students representing all gender, racial, economic, and geographic groups.

Dr. Shirley Miles, Director, Department of Defense Education Activity, announced the organization's 2008 standardized test results for the TerraNova multiple assessments yesterday. "We are very encouraged with our students continued progress in this year's TerraNova results," she said.

"The TerraNova tests are important for several reasons. They provide students, teachers, and administrators with a means to measure the strengths and weaknesses of our students compared to students in schools across the United States. They are an indicator of our successes and the areas in which we need improvement," said Diana Ohman, Director, Department of Defense Dependents Schools – Europe.

"Parents and teachers can again be pleased with the achievements shown by our students. The vast majority of DoDDS-Europe students scored above the national average in all academic categories," said Ohman. Of the 22,527 DoDDS-E students in grades 3-11 taking this year's TerraNova test, 75 percent scored above the national percentile in language arts. Seventy four percent scored above the national percentile in reading. Seventy three percent scored above the national percentile in social studies. Seventy two percent scored above the national percentile in science, and 71 percent scored above the national average in math.

"These scores are significant in that TerraNova samples abilities of students from across the nation," Ohman said. "Our students come from, and in many cases will return to schools in every state in CONUS. In comparison to stateside schools, DoDDS-Europe students are doing very well."

The DoDEA Community Strategic Plan requires the reporting of student data by the percentage of students within each national percentile quarter. DoDDS-Europe as well as all DoDEA is moving closer to the goal of 75 percent of all students scoring at or above the 50th percentile mark.

"We'll take the results of these tests and focus on the problem areas. Although our overall test scores are very good, they show that Europe needs to raise the percent of students by two percent to meet the standard for the 4th quartile in math," said Ohman.
