DoDDS Europe Curriculum & Programs

To create a world-class education system, DoDEA has developed rigorous and demanding curriculum standards. The curriculum standards specify what students should know and be able to do. DoDEA curriculum standards are based on the content standards produced by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Teachers of English/the International Reading Association, the National Research Council's National Science Education Standards and the National Council for Teachers of Social Studies.

Standards are important because they set high levels of learning and performance for all students. The standards also serve as a basis for assessment across the curriculum. They focus on what is important in each curricular area. The standards provide the framework for instruction by identifying what students should know and be able to do. The standards for grades PK-12 can be accessed at by visiting the DoDEA website

English Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Science compromise the four foundational curricular areas. DoDEA curricular coordinators provide guidance and support to the Instructional System Specialists (ISS) located in the district offices. The district specialists include grade 4-12 ISSs for English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies as well as an Early Childhood expert PK-3 for Mathematics and Science and a second Early Childhood expert for English Language Arts and Social Studies. The ISS located at the districts work closely with headquarters, superintendents, principals, and teachers implementing and supporting the standards in the classrooms.

In addition there are many programs that span PK-12. Instructional System Specialists (ISS) supporting these programs are based at the DoDEA-Europe Area office currently located in Wiesbaden, Germany. Program support (hot link each program to their web page) based in this office includes Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), Advanced Placement (AP)/Gifted Education, Fine Arts, English as a Second Language (ESL), Health/ PE, Foreign Language/ Host Nation, Early Childhood Education, Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) which includes counselors, psychologists, and nurses, Professional Technical Studies, Educational Technology, Information Centers, and a variety of Special Education programs including Autism and Assistive Technology.
