DoDEA
Teacher Argonauts
Two science teachers at Sigonella Middle/High School and Lakenheath
Middle School were selected as Teacher Argonauts to participate
in live summer expeditions to support the new Monster Storms
Curriculum. Video and journal entry accounts of their expeditions
with the host researchers and JASON Student Argonauts will be
posted on the Monster Storms Website.
JASON
Expedition Monster Storms (SY 06-07)
The Monster Storms curriculum for SY 06-07 is in a pilot phase
and is being piloted by 10-12 DoDDS-E 6th grade teachers. This
pilot curriculum will transport students and teacher to the
center of Earth’s most extreme weather. Based on current
research from NOAA, NASA, and National Geographic, the JASON
exploration team will embark with researchers on a mission to
understand weather, climate and extreme storm events:
· Hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms and lightning
· Weather dynamics and storm formation
· Forecasting, warnings and safety precautions
· Extreme weather impact and human interaction
· Climate and global monitoring.
Any teacher may access the
pilot website and use the resource links during this pilot
phase.
JASON
Expedition Mysteries of Earth and Mars Year 2 (SY 06-07)
Dr. Robert Ballard and a team of scientists will take middle-grade
students and teachers on the trip of a lifetime…to Mars!
Working with renowned partner organizations such as NASA, as
well as research and academic institutions around the world,
students will conduct investigations and make discoveries that
will help unravel the Mysteries of Earth and Mars. See how this
curriculum aligns to DoDEA
Science Standards, select the Department of Defense Tab
and DoDEA Science Standards will appear in the drop down menu.
JASON Project Mysteries of Earth and Mars is recommended from
grades 5-8.
JASON
Expedition Disappearing Wetlands Year 3 (SY 06-07)
Wetlands are critical life-supporting ecosystems found throughout
the world that provide habitat for an incredible diversity of
plants and animals. They are the nurseries for countless species
of fish and shellfish that we depend on for food, protect vulnerable
coastlines from hurricanes and storm surges, and help filter
and purify the small amount of freshwater that is found on our
planet. Wetlands are also threatened ecosystems. The mission
of JASON Expedition:
Disappearing Wetlands is to better
understand what wetlands are, why they are disappearing, and
how to best manage these ecosystems in Louisiana, in your neighborhood,
and around the world. Go to JASON
Project Homepage to see an update on wetlands as a result
of recent hurricanes.
JASON Project Disappearing Wetlands is Included in the 6th Grade
Science Implementation
All DoDEA 6th grade students will be participating in the JASON
Expedition Disappearing Wetlands to support DoDEA standards
as part of the science implementation. All 6th grade classes
will use TI Explorer Calculators and Vernier Probeware to complete
scientific investigations.
