Foreign Languages in the Elementary School (FLES)
In the fall of 2006-2007, DoDDS-Europe began to pilot FLES Spanish programs in kindergarten and first grades in nine elementary schools. All students in K-1 will participate in the program, consisting of a minimum of ninety minutes of instruction per week in Spanish. The emphasis for this program is for the students to develop functional proficiency in the target language. This program is expected to expand to more schools and to higher grades, eventually enabling DoDDS-Europe students to study Spanish K-12.
Partial Immersion
Several DoDDS-Europe elementary schools offer segments of the subject content area such as mathematics, science, or social studies to be taught in a second language: German, Italian, Spanish and French. Students enrolled in these programs learn the subject area content in the target language. Programs vary in amount of time spent in the target language, but to be a Partial Immersion FL program, the students must have a regularly scheduled part of their day taught in the foreign language.
Secondary Foreign Languages
Students may enroll in a second language course for high school credit as early as the seventh grade. Successful completion of the course(s) fulfills the high school graduation requirement of two years of a foreign language. Early secondary commencement of a foreign language study also enables a student to progress to higher levels of foreign language study, levels V and VI.
Host Nation Programs
The DoDDS-Europe Area schools have Host Nation programs in K-6. These programs introduce students to the culture and language of the Host Nation where the students are living.
