Student Academic Activities
DoDDS-Europe offers students a variety of state level activities and academic competitions. These activities are designed to enhance and extend classroom instruction and provide students with the opportunity to apply their academic skills in reality-based situations. The following activities are currently being sponsored by DoDDS-Europe:
- Model U.S. Senate
- April 20-24, 2009 MUSS is a unique simulation of the American congressional process in the United States Senate. High school students are assigned to play the roles of senators and other senior members of government. The activity will be held in Raunheim, Germany, from April 20-24, 2009. Student fees of approximately 350 Euro cover the costs of lodging, meals, and materials.
- National History Day
- April 22-23, 2009 Divided into two divisions (grades 6-8 and 9-12) and 7 categories, National History Day promotes the study of citizenship and civics through the construction of history based projects. These projects are entered in District, State, and National contests. District contests are usually held in mid February, with the DoDDS-E (State) contest held in Wiesbaden, Germany, on April 22-23, 2009. The registration fee for this activity is $25.00.

- Junior Science & Humanities Symposium
- February 23-25, 2009 JSHS is for students in grades 7-12 who are interested in the sciences, engineering or mathematics. Students work on original projects at their schools and then compete in the DoDDS-Europe Regional for scholarships and awards. JSHS is held February 23-25, 2009 in Reidstadt-Goddelau, Germany. There is a $100.00 student registration fee for this activity.
- Junior Leadership Seminar
- January 11-16, 2009 The Junior Leadership Seminar is a 6-day event for 7th grade students. This activity identifies and develops leadership skills for use in school. JLS will be held in Oberwesel, Germany from January 11-16, 2009. Students pay a registration fee of approximately 140 Euro, which covers the costs of lodging, meals, and materials.
- Professional Technical Studies Tech Expo
- The Professional Technical Studies Tech Expo is dedicated to showcasing the multifaceted aspects of the PTS programs in DoDDS schools. Each year the expo is filled with competitive events, static displays, and demonstrations of state-of-the-art technology from the education, private, and military sectors of industry and scientific endeavors. Middle and senior high school students from DoDDS-Europe schools are eligible to participate. The expo is scheduled to be held in the spring in Germany. There is a small registration fee for this event.
- Math Counts
- March 25, 2009 This is a national program where students are coached in problem solving and math skills. Competitions are held at the School, Chapter, and State levels. The event is open to schools with students in grades 6-8. The State Competition is scheduled to take place March 25, 2009, in Wiesbaden, Germany. DoDDS-Europe pays the registration fee for each participating DoDDS-E school to compete.
- Odyssey of the Mind
- March 28, 2009 In Odyssey of the Mind, participants in grades 3 through 8 compete as individual school teams (5 to 7 members each) solving a variety of problems through creative solutions. Teams are determined at the school level. Each District Competition will be held in late February. District winners will compete at the DoDDS-E (State) Competition, slated for March 28, 2009, in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The annual OotM membership fee is $100.00, paid by each participating school.
- Berlin Seminar
- February 9-13, 2009 This activity is reserved for 14 DoDDS-E high school seniors, who will join 14 German students at the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung in Berlin. American and German students work together to achieve cultural understanding using Berlin as a case study. There is a student registration fee for this activity of 80 Euro for this event which is held from February 9-13, 2009.
- Academic Games
- March 4-6, 2009 Each DoDDS-E high school may send one Academic Games team to compete in the two day tournament. The format is patterned after the "College Brain Bowl." Questions reflect a broad high school curriculum to include the subjects of math, science, social studies, history, culture, language arts, and literature. A team is composed of one freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, and one alternate from any class. Held annually, the competition for 2009 will be from March 4-6, 2009 in Hambachtal, Germany.
- Future Business Leaders of America
- March 30 - April 2, 2009 FBLA students strive to develop personal and professional skills that can be utilized as career supportive competencies. FBLA chapter members promote civic and personal responsibilities throughout their respective communities. The Spring Leadership Conference is scheduled for March 30 through April 2, 2009, in Garmisch, Germany. The conference will include seminars on public speaking, leadership techniques, organizational skills, education/career guidance and competitions ranging from audio visual presentations to web design. At the event local chapters elect the new State FBLA Officers and prepare for the summer FBLA National Conference. Students attending an FBLA conference benefit from increased exposure to divergent viewpoints, an expanded knowledge base, and a sense of belonging to a state and national organization. Attendance at the Spring Leadership Conference is highly recommended for aspiring Local and State Officer Candidates.
- International Student Leadership Institute
- March 1-6, 2009 ISLI is a week-long experiential learning program for developing leadership skills for high-school students, in a setting that allows 75 DoDDS-Europe students to live, work, and learn with 75 students from top schools in 10 European countries. Working in small groups that become the setting for the actual development of their own leadership skills, this eyeopening experience creates knowledge, understanding, and friendships that can last for a lifetime. ISLI is to be held in Oberwesel, Germany from March 1-6, 2009. The cost per student is approximately 215 Euro.
- JROTC Drill Competition
- February 28, 2009 Army JROTC Drill Competition Finals will be held at Ansbach (Katterbach Army Airfield) on May 16th. The cadets compete in two general categories of Regulation Drill and Exhibition Drill with judging in 7 different events. Air Force-Navy European Drill Finals will be held February 28, 2009, at Wiesbaden Army Airfield. There are no registration fees for these events.
- Future Educators Association
- February 10-13, 2009 FEA is for students in grades 9-12 who are interested in a career in education. Leading educators from DoDDS-Europe and the United States present teaching and learning strategies in a seminar setting. FEA European Conference will be held from February 10-13, 2009, at the Edelweiss Lodge in Garmisch, Germany.
