DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program is the DoDEA adopted drug education program. It is taught as a part of the DoDDS Health Curriculum. This is a nationwide program located in 80% of the school districts in the United States and in 55 foreign countries.

Each year 33 million students receive DARE instructionWithin DoDDS-Europe, the DARE program is required for all elementary schools and is optional for the middle level schools. Instruction is provided by uniformed military personnel most of who are security police personnel drawn from the 3 major branches of the Armed Forces. Each year the Army, Air Force, and Navy security offices provide personnel for training to be DARE instructors. This training is for a period of two weeks and is conducted by DARE mentors from the United States who are themselves police officers within their communities.

Currently DARE instruction within the elementary schools is for a period of 17 weeks and in the middle schools 10 weeks. This time frame will change in the near future as DARE introduces its new and improved curriculum that is designed to incorporate more modern teaching techniques for extended student learning and retention.
